How to Design Your Bedroom for a Better Night’s Sleep

The design of your bedroom is vital to the quality of your sleep. Having the right night time routine and environment to carry it out in, can make a huge difference. The practical setup, visual design and ambience of your bedroom all have an effect.

This can include the bed and furniture, lighting, colours, sounds and smell. If you struggle to fall asleep and stay asleep each night, it might be time to look at the design and setup of your bedroom. Here’s what to consider.

Choose Calming Colours

Cooler colours are said to lower blood pressure, helping you to relax and get a proper night’s sleep. Consider colours such as blue, green, silver, grey, cream and lavender. If a whole room painted one of these colours is too much for you, try painting the walls white and using accents of one colour. Avoid a colour like red, which can increase stress and raise the heart rate.

Invest in Custom Blackout Blinds or Curtains

Light pouring through the windows is not going to let you sleep. And even a street light outside the window can be extremely disruptive when trying to nod off. If this happens to you, purchase custom blinds or curtains made from a quality blackout material. The extra investment up-front, is well worth the extra hours of sleep you will gain.

Declutter Your Bedroom

Too much clutter can increase the feelings of anxiety and cause stress levels to rise. To get a better night’s sleep, you first need to be relaxed, so removing excess clutter is extremely important. Remove electronics, exercise equipment, piles of bills, work papers and anything else that isn’t related to sleep. Make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary, that is dedicated to relaxation.

Choose a Quality Mattress

A quality mattress can improve sleep quality massively. It can increase comfort and support, relieve pressure points and reduce back pain. A bad mattress is often a main cause for not being able to sleep. Choose a new mattress that suits your body and age. A softer mattress is often better for the older generation and memory foam is not best for hot sleepers, as it cultivates the most heat.

Infuse the Air with Relaxing Scents

Aromatherapy is often used to relieved stress and promote feelings of calm. To create a relaxing ambience before bed, consider using an oil diffuser. Essential oils such as lavender, chamomile and ylang ylang are known to increase relaxation, by lowering the heart rate and reducing body temperature.
